Katía Truijen (NL, 1990) is a media researcher, curator and musician based in Rotterdam, often taking the train. Her work is concerned with bringing people together around practices of listening, archiving, and rehearsing alternative urban, technological and ecological futures. She develops public formats – from public programmes, performances and parties to publications – always situated and in collaboration with others.

Katía is co-founder of interdisciplinary platform //\ hoekhuis with Sjaak Douma, and she is part of Loom, practice for cultural transformation.
She curates the context programme for Rewire festival, and is research tutor at the Studio for Immediate Spaces at the Sandberg Instituut.

In 2022, Katía co-curated the RITUAL discourse programme for Rewire festival, the conference on MUTATION as part of FIBER Festival, and worked as co-researcher on CRAFTED, on archiving the tacit knowledge surrounding analogue audiovisual production, with the Vrije Universiteit and the Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision.

Between 2014 and 2021, Katía developed research projects and public programmes within Het Nieuwe Instituut’s research department. She was assistant curator for Work, Body, Leisure, the Dutch Pavilion at the 16th Venice International Architecture Biennale (2018), and co-editor of Architecture of Appropriation: On Squatting as Spatial Practice (2019) and For the Record: On the Politics of Music Video Culture (2021). In 2022 she co-curated and co-organized Housing Futures, a weekend on spatial strategies for alternative forms of living.

Katía has published about digital culture, artistic research, architecture and design for among others Sonic Acts, Boekmanstichting, V2_, Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Virtueel Platform, Institute of Network Cultures, IDFA DocLab, WhyNot, Frascati and FIBER. She holds an MA in New Media and Digital Cultures with her thesis Urban Dialogues (2012-2013) and graduated cum laude from the BA in Media and Culture with a Minor in Aesthetics (2008-2011) at the University of Amsterdam. She also completed the Art & Research Honours Programme at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie (2009-2010).

Previously, she taught at the University of Amsterdam, department of Media Studies (2013-2014), was a guest lecturer at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, Royal Conservatoire of The Hague, Design Academy Eindhoven, ArtEZ University of the Arts, de Nederlandse Filmacademie, the 25th International Philosophy Olympiad and the iMAL Urban Media Lab Symposium Brussels, and visiting critic at The Berlage Institute, Sandberg Instituut, and the Architectural Association School of Architecture.

Katía co-curated the Urban Summer festival (2021) and Archiweek (2020) titled Fundamental Acts together with Traumnovelle and humbble commissioned by Urban Brussels, as well as self-initiated festivals So it Goes (2019), Club Voyage (2015), Frisse Moed (2012), Het Verval (2012), and the exhibition Souvenirs at Felix Meritis in Amsterdam (Gevonden Voorwerpen, 2015).

Between 2011-2014 Katía released a series of records together with Denis Wouters, Jelle Himmelreich, Zoli Soos, Viktor Truijen, and many collaborating musicians. She joined Port of Call, with Pieter van Vliet, Tijs Kulker, Bastiaan Tichler and Edoardo Felici in 2018. Katía’s latest record Room to Stay produced with Mart Jeninga was launched in July 2020.
